Swine flu and diabetes

Swine flu and diabetes is a serious combination and a person with diabetes is at higher risk of developing complications as a result of contracting this flu.

What is it?

It is a new more dangerous strain of the influenza virus which normally tends to affect pigs. However, this variant of the flu has been transferred to human. The symptoms of swine influenza (flu) are closely related to normal flu symptoms.

Most people who catch this flu usually recover in matter of just a few days without any special treatments. A person with diabetes is no more likely to contract this type of flu virus than the average person.

The fact you have to remember is that people with diabetes have to control their blood sugar levels to stay alive. It is the proper blood sugar level control which ensures the prevention of or future development of diabetes complications.

The flu symptoms can cause difficulty in the proper monitoring and management of blood sugar levels.

Every effort should be taken to prevent this disease and the complications which it may result.

Prevention

The best defence is always prevention. Influenza is spread like any ordinary cold or flu. It is important that certain practical hygiene technique is followed:

• Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when you cough or sneeze,

• Bin the tissue quickly,

• Wash your hands as quickly as possible using soap and water,

• Clean surfaces with disinfectant regularly and

• Avoid people who suffer from symptoms of flu
