Swine flu symptoms

Swine flu symptoms are relatively the same as those of the ordinary flu, but could be more severe and may even cause more severe complications.

Diabetics should take note of these symptoms of swine flu since people with diabetes are among the high risk group.

The typical symptoms are:

Sudden fever (i.e. a high body temperature of over 38C or 100.4F) and (or) a sudden cough

Other symptoms may include:

- headache

- tiredness

- chills

- aching muscles

- limb or joint pain

- diarrhoea or stomach upset

- sore throat

- runny nose

- sneezing

- loss of appetite

It is important to note that being a diabetic does not make you more likely to contract swine flu than the ordinary non diabetes sufferers.

However, when diabetics contract swine flu, or any other strain of flu or influenza, it makes control of the blood glucose level more difficult and we all know how important control of blood sugar levels is.

As swine flu spreads, you should be aware and more alert of the flu symptoms so that you can recognise it in yourself and others.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms please it may be necessary to call your health care professional or call the National Pandemic Flu Service hotline (UK residence):

• Telephone: 0800 1 513 100

• Minicom: 0800 1 513 200

Swine flu treatment

In most cases the symptoms will go away after of few days. If you suffer from severe symptoms then your health care professional may prescribe Tamiflu which is an antiviral drug.

Scientists are working on a vaccine which should be completed and ready for distribution later this year (maybe by August or September 2009)
