Type 1 diabetes diet goals
The
type 1 diabetes
diet goal is to eat a health balanced diet. Actually this type of meal eating and preparation is recommended for everyone who wants to enjoy good health. The quantity, type and timing of your food are critical to achieving your type 1 diabetes diet goals. Diabetics need to eat lots of fresh vegetables and fresh fruits. The fresh vegetable and fruits will give the body the nutrients it needs to function properly. Remember with type1 diabetes the body no longer produces insulin. This simply means the automated process of your body releasing insulin in the blood stream after a meal in now in manual mode and you have to do it yourself. To do this effectively you have to know how each food group will react to stomach juices to learn how much and how quick glucose will be release into the blood stream. This information will be use by you to determine the balance between your insulin intake and the type on insulin to use with the type of food eaten. Whether slow acting if the glucose will be released slowly or fast acting to quickly bring down blood sugar levels. If there is too little insulin counteract the amount of glucose coming from the digested food then the blood glucose level will rise too high (hyperglycaemia). If there is too much insulin or not enough glucose coming from the digested food then the blood glucose level will fall too low (hypoglycaemia). I know it is a bit of a pain but it has to be done to prevent the onset of diabetes complications. There are a few methods that have been devised to help diabetics with meal preparation and planning.
The diabetic food pyramid
is one such method. The
diet for diabetes plate method
is another. There is also the glycaemic index or glycaemic load and carbohydrate counting. These will be discussed in another article.
